Basic Training-5 important commands

COME

Here you have one of the most important commands of all.  It is the best way to keep your dog safe in all instances.  Begin training this command inside.  Squat down a small distance away and in front of your pup.  Open your arms and say "Come".  As soon as your puppy start toward you, praise him enthusiastically.  Allow the puppy to come up to you and and gently rub his chest while continuing to praise him.  You can also reward him with a treat.  Coming to you should always be fun.  Don't call him to you to be punished, and don't use the command to take your dog inside when they are playing out of doors.

HEEL

This command will make it more enjoyable for you to walk your Malamute.  Start with your dog next to you, by your left side.  Hold a squeaky toy in your right hand, placing your hand across your body so the toy is in front of and slightly above your puppy's head. As you start to walk, say the command word "Heel".  Keep his attention on the toy as you walk.  Praise him when he is walking, praise him when he looks at the toy, and praise him if he looks up at you.   The "Heel" needs to be taught in short lessons.  Begin with just a 20 or 30 second "heel" done correctly.  Slowly build the length of time that he walks with you and begin to remove the toy from the training.

SIT

Training your puppy to sit is really an easy thing to do.  Hold a treat above but close to your puppy's nose.  Say the command, "Sit" and slowly move the treat back over his head.  This will cause him to sit.  If your puppy backs up, put your other hand on his rump and gently guide him to a sitting position.  Avoid any real pressure on his back end.  Use the treat to guide his head and your hand to keep him from moving backwards and he will sit.  Remember to praise him as soon as he is in a sitting position.

STAY

Begin training this command with your dog beside you in the sitting position.  Keep the leash loose as you pivot around and face your dog. Hold the open palm of your hand in front of your puppy's face and say "Stay."  Take a step or two away from your dog without turning your back on him.  To start, expect him to stay only fora few short seconds.  Then, step back to him resting your foot on the leash as you do so that he cannot jump up on you.  Say the word you will use for a release word, and praise him.  Slowly, you can lengthen the time he stays and the distance you move away from him.

DOWN

Start with your puppy sitting next to you.  kneel down beside him and place your hand on his shoulders.  Hold a treat in your left hand right in front of your puppy's face.  Say "Down" and slowly lower the treat straight down to between his paws, then slowly pull it straight out away from your pup.  Once he is down, praise him and let him have the treat.
