HOUSE TRAINING

Here is one of the most important tips for house training your new puppy.  PAY ATTENTION!!!  Most difficulties in house training are caused by human error.  Your puppy will always give you signs that they need to go outside.  It is up to you to recognize them and get your puppy outside.

First, your puppy will start to sniff around.  This is your first clue.  He is  looking for a place to relieve himself.  Then, he'll start to circle.  So, he's found the spot and is getting set to go.  At this point, you should already have him leashed and outside!  Once you get him outside, be patient.  The move from indoors to outdoors will slow the process somewhat.  After all, now he's outdoors and there is a lot to see and smell!  Give his mind time to come back around t the business at hand.  When he does go, PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE!!!  And don't rush him right back inside as soon as he is finished.  Remember, outside time is fun time for him.  Once he has relieved himself, let him have a little more fun with you out in the fresh air.

This is also where crate training will be helpful.  Whenever you cannot watch your puppy for the potty signs, put him in his crate.  As soon as you take him out of the crate, get him outside.  This also applies to play.  Puppies will eliminate after playing, so when you have played for a little while, get him outside.  Puppies will also need to go to the bathroom after eating.  The time may vary from puppy to puppy, but you will learn your pups schedule. A general rule of thumb is 15 minutes after eating or playing.

You can also train you puppy to use one area of your yard for his bathroom.  Just always take him to the same place when you are training him and he will go back there almost every time.  Making clean up much easier on you. Just remember, NEVER scold your puppy for doing their business in the house. Think about it. They are only doing what nature has called them to do. It is up to you to "train" your puppy to go outside and "praise" always gets better results than scolding.
