LEASH TRAINING

DSC02855

Like this fellow, leash training your Malamute will bring out the howls, but be persistent, and prepared for resistance.

You will need your leash, collar and a pocket full of treats to start. Remember, leash training is where all other training of your Mal comes from. Without teaching your dog to walk properly on a leash, it is very difficult to get them to sit, down and heel. We believe that a well trained puppy is a happy puppy and that makes for a very gratifying relationship with your Malamute.

Here again, a little patience and work on your part will be beneficial for your dog.  The best way to leash train your puppy is to start in the house.  Simply attach a leash and let her drag it around for 10 or 15 minutes.  Give her lots of praise when she walks without giving the leash any attention.  Once she is used to the tug of the leash, we suggest separation training.  Be sure, first, that your puppy cannot slip out of her collar.  Take your pup outside and attach her leash to something strong and heavy.  Then, hook her up and walk away from her.  When you are about 30 feet away, turn and watch her.  As soon as she stops fighting the leash and crying, go to her and "rescue" her from the post or tree, or whatever her leash is secured to.  Take the leash and start walking, she'll follow happily.
