Q. What is the difference between full and limited AKC Registration?
A. Full registration means you can show/breed the dog when it reaches the right age. Limited registration is for pets only (no breeding).
Q. Should we use the same food?
A. I think if at all possible yes, so your puppy will grow to its full potential.
Q. What brand of food do we use and recommend?
A. We use Purina Pro Plan puppy food for our pups and pro plan for our adults. Purina Pro Plan Large Breed is made with meat as its #1 ingredient.
Q. Do the puppies have shots and worming?
A. They have one shot before they leave and have been wormed also.
Q. Do you have a health guarantee?
A. Yes, that is with every puppy.
Q. Do they shed a lot?
A. Malamutes blow their undercoats twice per year. They do not shed year round like many breeds. When they blow their coat, they lose a lot of hair at one time.
Q. How do they handle the heat?
A. Like any dog, to cope with summer heat they need a constant supply of water to drink and some shade.
Heavy exercise should be avoided in excessive heat.
Q. What are they like with children?
A. Due to their gentle temperament they are a very good family dog. Malamutes love attention, they are patient by nature and will tolerate young children fawning over them.
Q. What are they like inside?
A. Alaskan Malamutes, aside from their shedding coat, are excellent house dogs. They are extremely clean and quiet dogs.
Q. How much do they eat?
A. Most Malamutes love food, however they eat surprisingly little for their size. The actual amount of food will vary depending on the metabolism and activity level of the dog, and the type of food that is given. A working adult will eat five cups of high density food per day. Puppies require smaller, more frequent meals.
Q. Do they fight other dogs?
A. No, Malamutes are pack oriented dogs. As such they communicate with other dogs in a variety of ways. An ill mannered, aggressive dog is not a good team dog and therefore not a good sled dog. However poorly socialized and trained Malamutes can be aggressive towards other dogs. For this reason it is very important for a Malamute owner to train the dog carefully and make sure to properly socialize it with other dogs.
Q. What kind of cold conditions can Malamutes live in?
A. Malamutes can work and live in extremely cold conditions, approaching 70 below zero.
Q. How much exercise do they need and what kind?
A. You should not strenuously exercise a puppy under six months of age. Their play is enough to keep them healthy. Once the dog is six months old a puppy kindergarten is a very good idea. Malamutes also enjoy jogging, but this should not be attempted until the dog is eighteen months or older. Hiking with a dog pack is great fun.
Q. Is a Malamute part wolf ?
No, the Malamutes is a domesticated pure bred dog and has been for many centuries. They are mistaken for wolves and they often used in movies to depict wolves but they are most certainly not wolves or part wolf.
